This copperplate map of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Newfoundland (Terra Nova), and Nova Scotia (Acadia), with its careful depiction of the locations of the major fishing grounds, is doubtless derived from French sources. Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) was a Franciscan monk, cosmographer, cartographer, publisher, and encyclopedist known in particular for his atlases and globes. He spent most of his life in Venice.
